Why Africa Can Prevent The Food Crisis - 871 Words

Dr. Galbraith raised some very specific global questions during his second talk. The largest question raised was if Africa can rise to the challenge of helping the world during on the impending food crisis. Galbraith discussed several points that show why Africa could potentially play a large role in the ongoing food crisis. Africa is considered a very large land mass in relation to its population, having 60% of the Earth’s uncultivated arable land and the continent having over a quarter of the total arable land on Earth. With this kind of land, Africa has the potential to provide food security not only for the African people, but the rest of the population. Because Africa has underdeveloped agricultural resources, including arable land, an agricultural transformation could break the cycle of poverty among the African people. Keeping all this in mind, the overall global question presented is if Africa is the answer we have been looking for to solve the food crisis. Dr. Galbraith addressed this question in several ways. Per the data, we will reach an estimated population of 8.3 billion people by 2030, which requires 50% more energy and food and 30% more fresh water. With their amount of uncultivated arable land, Africa has become a strong force on the topic of securing 50% more food. Africa does not currently possess the technology to have the kind of production needed to overcome their poverty cycle and low crop yield. There is also a huge diversity in the arable land,Show MoreRelatedJames and the Giant1694 Words   |  7 Pagessection IV looks at possible answers to the research question. Vygotskys Sociocultural Theory and Hong Kong Essay Example

Vygotskys Sociocultural Theory and Hong Kong Paper Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory focused on the affect of the surroundings, namely the culture, peers, and adults, on the developing child. Vygotsky proposed the â€Å"zone of proximal development† (ZPD) to explain the influence of the cultural context. ZPD refers to the range of tasks which a child cannot finish alone since they are too difficult, but such tasks can be completed with guidance and aid from more-skilled individuals. The lower limit of ZPD is the level of skill that the children can reach alone, and the upper limit of ZPD is the level of skill that the children can reach with guidance from a more skilled individual, such as teachers, parents and more-skilled peers. Imagine a child is having difficulty writing book reports. With suitable aid from teachers and parents, this child can improve in writing book reports and eventually he/she can finish a detailed book report after reading on his own. In this example, the upper limit of the ZPD is to finish a book report and the assistance provided by the adults is called scaffolding. The assistance provided by the more-skilled individuals will act as a scaffolding to help the children to develop into their upper limit of ZPD. As the children are making progress, the assistance will gradually reduce and removed when the children can complete the task in their upper limit of ZPD on their own. Vygotsky also emphasized on the importance of language in a child’s development. According to Vygotsky, private speech, which Piaget deemed egocentric and immature, is crucial during early childhood years as children use it for planning, guiding and monitoring their actions and help them finish tasks. Vygotsky suggested that children who use private speech will be more socially competent as children must be experienced in using language to communicate with others before making the transition from external to internal speech. In the past, the main emphasis of education of Hong Kong is to get good grades in public exams, as they provide more opportunity towards success. This results in schools focusing on instructing knowledge to students like feeding chickens in a farm and doesn’t really care whether the students understand the knowledge instructed or not. This exam-oriented style of education ignores the students’ development as a whole, and generates many graduates with good grades in school and struggled in workplace. The old educational style of Hong Kong seems not to fit with Vygotsky’s theory. Nowadays, the emphasis of education in Hong Kong seems to be starting to shift from instructing knowledge to assisting students to construct knowledge. As teachers will not only instruct knowledges, but also guides students in finishing tasks such as laboratory exercises and group projects. This implies the ZPD as teachers will now try to dig students’ potential and help students to reach them. Peer mentors are also very common in secondary schools nowadays. Senior form students will volunteer or be recruited by teachers to assist junior form students to finish assignments or group projects. Cross-age mentoring is more common than same-age mentoring. Same-age mentoring will only occur in class, as students with better understanding on the subject will help explain the concepts to other students and assist them in finishing in-class assignments. The peer mentors are suggested to adjust the amount of guidance according to the progress of the tutees. This implies the scaffolding concept and that culture is important in learning as the tutees are making progress, the peer mentors will reduce the amount of assistance by allowing the tutee to think on his own. Also, the mentors can act as a guide to the tutees so that the tutees can learn from both the teachers and peer mentors. This can also stimulate thinking and the mentors can learn from tutoring as well. The idea of private speech is not very popular in Hong Kong, as children exercising it will be deemed stupid and immature, and parents will feel embarassed and think their children have mental issues. In Hong Kong, a â€Å"good† child should be quiet when working. Therefore, the use of private speech when working on tasks are not encouraged. Students in Hong Kong are now encouraged to take part in various activities such as field trips and museum visits. These activities implies the key concept of Vygotsky’s theory: the importance of culture in learning by creating simulations of real-world circumstances and help students to construct the knowledge the teacher desired. However, such activities are not very popular among Hong Kong students as they tend to think such activities as a waste of time and money. In Hong Kong, the culture emphasizes on creating good results with the least effort. This results in students attending expensive tutorials just to get desired grades and attend desired universities. It seems to me that all the effort from the Education Bureau and schools to turn an instructive, exam-oriented education ystem to a more constructive, all-rounded system are ineffective as the students consider this as redundant. It’s very common for students in Hong Kong to say things like â€Å"I prefer past papers to field trips† as past paper will help students get good grades but field trips won’t. To conclude, implications of Vygotsky’s theory can be found in traditional schools in Hong Kong. In my opinion, the key concept of Vygotsky’s theory and other social constructivists’ theory is to stimulate thin kning and construct knowledge through sociocultural activities. This can definitely help students to develop a better understanding of knowledge and stimulate all-round development as a person. However, the education system in Hong Kong, even with addition of elements to exercise Vygotsky’s theory, is still very exam-oriented. This is mainly due to the reluctance of the students and teachers. As students find these additions of elements redundant and a waste of time, some teachers may also find these additional workload is tiring and ineffective.

The Relationship Between Epistemology and Metaphysics Essay Essays

The Relationship Between Epistemology and Metaphysics Essay Essays The Relationship Between Epistemology and Metaphysics Essay Paper The Relationship Between Epistemology and Metaphysics Essay Paper In many ways epistemology clears the manner for metaphysical building or hypothesis. By adhering to the rules of one subdivision of doctrine. it allows us to go better at seeking within the other. It is true that epistemological thoughts are frequently knocked down by metaphysics. but when one considers that it is wholly possible to establish metaphysical thoughts on epistemology. it becomes clear that the subdivisions of doctrine are really much intertwined and slightly mutualist upon each other for lucidity and ground. It is a unusual philosophical mutualism from which a magnificent and new being emerges. We know that the end of metaphysics is to somehow develop an across-the-board hypothesis as to what the ultimate nature of the existence is and world itself. The human head being the manner it is. will non accept any of the possibilities unearthed by metaphysical oppugning unless it is in portion rationalized by epistemological enquiry. For illustration. the old inquiry about the tree falling in the forests. would it still do sound if no 1 was at that place to hear it? Well scientific discipline and its epistemological thirst for cognition has solved that inquiry by uncovering the being of sound moving ridges. which would be at that place irrespective of the emptiness of the forests. Or has it? On the surface epistemology seems to hold solved the inquiry but the fact is metaphysically talking it has non been solved at all because the inquiry was about the nature of world itself. and whether or non the world of the tree falling would even be if there was no 1 to see it. Would the existence merely withdraw the part itself that was non being experienced by anyone? This inquiry can non be answered by either subdivision. but perchance by a combination of the two. With respects to epistemology. the universe really exists as a series of images. thoughts and concrete signifiers that can be interacted with. Yet despite the nonsubjective mentions that are this universe. it still can non be explained or even researched in an epistemological manner without first meeting some profound inquiries which in bend lead to farther quandary. The inquiry as to how one grounds is one such quandary. yet this inquiry and the myriad possibilities that arise from it falls partly in the sphere of metaphysics. Epistemology. in order to map as it is supposed to. must accept that cognition can be communicated and that world is a measure that can be known. at least to some extent. Because there must be an implicit in similarity between persons in order be able to pass on this cognition. so there must be at some degree a similarity between human heads and that means that the constructs tied up in metaphysics must be linked to epistemology. This unusual dualism does non take away from either construct ; so it really enhances each one. By giving up dependance on the construct of uninterrupted world. something outside scientific discipline. epistemology does non release nonsubjective truth ; alternatively it grabs holds of it even more tightly and wraps itself up in the dualism created by its mutualism with metaphysics. The nucleus constructs espoused by both of these subdivisions of doctrine are non at bosom incompatible. in fact we see that the antonym is rather true. Merely as the foundation of epistemological enquiry is the belief in the being of things. it is merely disposed that it should be counterbalanced by metaphysics. which inquiries that really existence. Without this both subdivisions would be in provinces of instability. There is a correlativity within and between epistemology and metaphysics which clearly demonstrates a relationship of mutuality between these nucleus constructs of doctrine. Conventionally there is believed to be a crisp differentiation between them. but at close scrutiny it becomes clear that these two subdivisions of doctrine far from being distant signifier each other are really elaborately intertwined. It is hence of import when going down either of these waies of wisdom to non merely tread lightly. but with our caput turned in the way of the other facet because with each of them steadfastly taking our custodies as we travel. we are apt to go baffled and lose our manner.

Who are Entrepreneurs Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Who are Entrepreneurs - Assignment Example Entrepreneurs work strategically- he or she is a person who knows the right people and can select a good team. These people are different people often termed as minorities (Bolton & Thompson, 2004, p-14). Smith (n.d, p-5) suggests that entrepreneurs are agents of innovation- they find loopholes in the processes and use them as opportunities. Many scholars debate on the fact whether entrepreneurs are born or made? The phenomenon of personality as a foundation for distinct behavior begs the same argument- whether personality is born or is it made? Is a human being a product of nature or nurture? At times certain skills and characteristics of people which are nurtured over time motivate him or her to become an entrepreneur in the future. Similarly, inherited skills may encourage a person to direct him or herself towards the path of business management. Bolton & Thompson (2004, p-21) in their book have concluded that entrepreneurs are both born and made. In some cases, they are born havi ng natural skills while in other cases, entrepreneurs are made after learning the rules of business. Â  Entrepreneurs work in an open, unstructured environment in which they have to do tasks from scratch-they have to begin from primary levels to reach the top (Zhao & Seibert, 2006, p-260). This statement suggests that entrepreneurs have to keep a balance between work-life, family and avoid conflicts between them. This workload, financial stake, and work environment may lead to physical and psychological stress. In such situations, people with high self-confidence and self-efficacy can survive these strong external pressures.

Greater happiness for a greater number Essay Example for Free

Greater happiness for a greater number Essay 1. Major strengths and weaknesses of this goal. a.   Major Strengths I think that the definition of happiness presented in the lecture is simple and elegant.   In addition, I think that the very attempt to address the issue of happiness is necessary and should really form the basis of psychology. b.   Major Weaknesses While I agree that psychology should have happiness as the optimal mental state from which to address patient’s mental health issues, I think there are some weaknesses in the approach to determine how to get clients—or people in general, to understand exactly what constitutes happiness. 2. Major personal insights gained After reviewing the lecture materials and much thought, I found it interesting that the approach to happiness is limited only to â€Å"physical† considerationswhen it is evident that people who have all the physical comforts and advantages are not the most happy. 3. Personal and professional application (if any) of some of the content. a. Personal application of some of the content While I consider myself a happy person, I think it is primarily from the standpoint of being fortunate to have met my physical needs (positive environment, life experiences, status, possessions). However, I’m becoming more aware that these things do not exclusively determine happiness. b. Professional application of some of the content    I am concerned that while all the approaches fail by analogy to define man as an animal, they still call him one. Man isn’t simply an animal. Why?   Animals lack the ability to have, express and satisfy these needs (e.g., an animal can’t compose a symphony, or create art).   Also, animals do not kill or create problems for other animals for reasons of envy, hate or jealousy—only human beings do.   I intend to consider the content, but to research and possibly assist to develop new ideas about how to assist individuals address their needs by first understanding that they are already complete human beings—no matter their circumstances, who simply seek various ways to express themselves. Until we understand this we can’t help society. 4. React to major areas of interest After some thought about Freud and Maslow’s approaches I began to feel that the flaws in these two approaches permeate all approaches to a â€Å"model† of happiness. All major approaches are devoid of spirituality, or the idea that man is more than an animal with physical needs. I feel that man is a spiritual being that is fulfilling or expressing himself, through his body, based on higher-level needs. I feel that this approach keeps individuals unhappy.   Why?   We perpetuate the myth that only through obtaining physical things, or outside circumstances can we achieve happiness.   I want to make positive psychology the cornerstone of my clinical approach, and use coaching models compatible with an area I feel needs more exploration: how to impact people suffering from pain, to increase their happiness potential regardless of their â€Å"physical† (social, economic, etc.) circumstances.
